Two men who have played important roles in shaping The Illawarra Turf Club have been celebrated at the Kembla Grange Classic Chairman’s Luncheon.
35-time Group One-winning jockey Wayne Harris has been inducted as a Legend of The Illawarra Turf Club. The honour recognises his outstanding achievements on track, as well as his contribution to the club through almost two decades of mounting yard coverage for Sky Racing.
A new award has also been named in Harris’s honour. The leading jockey at Kembla Grange’s marquee race meeting, The Gong, will win the Wayne Harris Golden Whip.
Barry Vandenbergh dedicated close to a quarter of a century to The Illawarra Turf Club as a Director, first functioning as the Treasurer, then stepping into the role of Chairman. During this time, he devoted an immeasurable number of hours for the betterment of the club and has continued to offer support since retiring 2025.
Family, friends, officials, and colleagues of both men were there to congratulate them.
